Joy predominately acts for employer clients, advising on a broad range of employment law issues including:
• redundancy, re-organisation and restructuring;
• potential dismissals;
• negotiation of termination agreements and associated financial packages,
• TUPE issues on mergers and service provision changes;
• disciplinary and grievance procedures;
• variations to terms and conditions;
• all forms of discrimination and maternity issues;
• status;
• management of sickness absence;
• bullying and harassment;
• drafting and reviewing contracts of employment, consultancy agreements, policies and procedures.

Example of contentious work
• Successfully defended a multi-day whistleblowing claim
• Successfully defended a claim of age discrimination brought by a job applicant
• Successfully defended a claim of discrimination on the grounds of perceived religious belief and nationality;
• Advocated to secure an order to strike out claims brought under the Working Time Regulations and National Minimum Wage legislation;
• Successfully defended a claim, brought by an applicant for a CEO post, of discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation;
• Successfully resisted a claim for discrimination on grounds of association with someone of a particular sexual orientation.

Examples of advisory work
• Advising a national charity in relation to the status, national minimum wage and working time implications arising from its proposed national volunteering programme.
• Advising a large national charity on the closure of its final salary pension scheme;
• Advising a group of charities in relation to TUPE issues following the loss of a service provision contract;
• Advising numerous organisations on large restructuring/redundancy programmes;
• Advising on the tax treatment of various employment benefits;
• Advising on compliance with the Age Regulations.
