Experience William, having initially worked within general litigation saw the opportunity to develop a dedicated and specialist Employment and Discrimination department. The department now has 12 fulltime lawyers providing specialist employment advice to a wide range of employers and to some employees. It has been one of the intentional designs of the department that it should provide services not just to employers
William's clientele range from senior executives in FTSE100 companies through to a considerable number of individuals working within the City. William also acts for a significant number of “household name” charities and a number of private sector businesses
Of particular significance is William's experience in cases involving allegations of discrimination
Examples of Work Undertaken • Successfully pursuing substantial whistle-blowing litigation on behalf of the Claimant in respect of allegations over drug safety and separately for a company facing similar allegations • Acting for an increasing number of Further Education colleges facing the need to restructure and achieve efficiencies • Acting for an employer in an employment and shareholder dispute (6 days in the High Court) in highly contentious and acrimonious litigation • Successfully defending a charity in respect of a substantial discrimination claim • Successful defence of commercial employer in respect of claims of unfair dismissal, breach of contract and discrimination • Representing female Investment Banker in making pregnancy related discrimination claims (seven figure settlement) • Representing a woman returning from maternity leave who had been sidelined by City agency employer (six figure settlement) • Representing woman in the City (ethnic minority – Head of Diversity) in claim against employer on grounds of race and sex discrimination (six figure settlement)
William has considerable experience in moving teams around the City and in managing restrictive covenants.
William has had a number of recent cases in the Employment Appeal Tribunal, and two cases in the Court of Appeal including the primary case involving issues relating to human rights in the workplace – X v. Y IRLR (2004) 625
Recent Advisory Work • William continues to act for a significant number of senior individuals in negotiating their departures • William provides advice to teams moving within the City, with particular emphasis on restrictive covenants – confidentiality and non-competition • William provides employers with day-to-day advice on a whole range of issues arising within the workplace
Lectures/Publications • William is a frequent lecturer at national conferences on Employment Law • As well as being a regular contributor to a number of publications including Third Sector, and Charity Finance, William is also frequently quoted in the media on employment law matters, and has undertaken a number of television interviews both for the BBC and for Sky
